Favorite Things: Weck Jars

I first saw these things of great beauty and elegance at the Heath ceramics stand in the Ferry Market building in San Franscisco. There is no denying that exceptional style, especially when it comes to food, often originates in Northern California. I love jars of all kinds, but Weck are quite possibly the most beautiful jars on the planet.

Weck jars come in all kinds of shapes and sizes, and they’re so pretty they want to just sit on your windowsill doing nothing more than casting lovely light across your sink and asking you to keep looking their way.

Their function is as stellar as their form though, and Weck jars will do the job for perfect hot-water-bath or refrigerator preserves. I love a good preserve, a good pickle, which is in fact very Lebanese of me, but I also love to use my Weck for any purpose I can think of, like storing and serving nuts, or as a vase.

The sumptuous dinner I had recently at Amercian Spoon Café in Petoskey included a tiny Weck jar in the center of the table, and then dessert, a salty caramel pudding, served in a beautiful jar too. Food does taste different depending on how it is presented, don’t you think? The Weck comforted me there, and made me feel stylish just for sitting at its table.

You can find Weck at their web site, but there the jars are sold in multi-packs. Buy individuals here, and many other spots you’ll find Googling around. Get your Weck, or any jars you like, scrubbed up and ready to go. We’re going to capture summer this week, before it takes flight.

    1. Aloha–I use a variety of sizes depending on what I have on hand. But the brine here should make about 3 quarts tightly packed pickles.

  1. I just received some of these and got the small mini mold, small cyclinder and small tulip. I noticed the glass was blown unevenly on the cyclinder ones did you notice this as well?

    1. Hi–nice to hear you have Weck! I did see that the glass wasn’t even on all of the jars, but I felt it added to the beauty!

  2. I believe Weck jars are actually from Germany. Heath and other shops like Crate & Barrel sell these. They’re fantastic for packing a yogurt parfait in to take to work! Also great for storing salad dressing.

  3. Maureen, what a find–they are lovely. I am from CA and never heard of them or saw them. TY for this posting. No surprise, because everything you do is about the esthetic.
