Gotta love winning!

I’m not a big gambler, though I have to say the first time I played roulette in Vegas was a thrill. But when it comes to food, and a contest comes my way, I’m in. The contest that came to my attention recently, by invitation from the editors of the Huffington Post Kitchen Daily, was about something near and dear to my heart…pie. They were looking to find the best summer pie, and I was happy to oblige.

I know we haven’t baked a ton of pies here, but trust me, when all is said and done (is that possible?), we will. But there is one pie, or rather a tart—which is really a pie with a more refined crust and no double crust—that we made not too long ago that I thought people outside our circle might also enjoy: the lemon meringue tart, the most extraordinary one, the one that melts in your mouth. Huffington Post’s Kitchen Daily thought so too—after many of you voted for my tart (my niece told me yesterday she voted so many times that she should get the credit for my rankings), it went on with the other top two pies for testing in the Kitchen Daily test kitchens.

Turns out they thought the lemon tart tasted quite extraordinary too, and they dubbed it the winner. Thank you, Kitchen Daily! What’s the prize? Most of all it’s sharing what we do here with new friends online. But it’s also a pie plate, which happens to be lemon yellow. When I receive it, we’ll bake up another summer pie that will keep our forks raised, no contest.

I know lots of you voted, and I thank you so very much for that. Also, this week as we celebrate the first birthday of Rose Water & Orange Blossoms in tandem with the birthday of our country, I thank you for giving my blog just what a tender young one needs, including plenty of encouragement and TLC. We are all overloaded with what to read, do, think, eat and simply be on any given day, so the time you take to join me here is something I consider precious. Together we are doing a special thing—every time our memories are evoked or our taste buds perked or our appreciation for beauty is fed, life becomes that much more meaningful and lovely. For that and for you and so much more, I am ever grateful.

  1. Congrats…on both counts, your anniversary and the winning pie recipe. As far as I’m concerned…there was no contest…because you were a shoe in..
Thanks and keep up the good work.

  2. Oh Hooray Maureen!!! So well deserved! Do they have a prize for the joy you bring to this world as well as your artistic and culinary delights?!

  3. So glad you earned this recognition. It’s well deserved and I’m glad I voted (though not as many times as your niece).
