Postcard from Lebanon

We have been in Lebanon for one day, and if I had to leave now, the trip would have been worth it.

Some scenes from today: a friend of a friend who is now a friend…takes her Sunday and spends it showing us around. Unrivaled hospitality and warmth. There was a village with beautiful churches and people (in Dier al Kamar), near the ancient palace hotel of Mir Amin. Lunch on the terrace overlooking the hills and valleys. It is all so delicious.

Sending lots of love. Wish you were here–

  1. Please tell me if you can, where i can purchase “Kaak” cookie molds. I have searched high and low for them. My mother passed away seven years ago and we cannot find the molds she brought with her from Lebanon many, many years ago.

    Thank you

  2. Maureen, Thank you for taking us with you on this special journey with your sentiments and pictures

  5. Maureen – glad you arrived safely, enjoy every minute of your trip. What a special one to have with your mom & Peggy with you. Brett and I were there in 2006 and I would go back in a heartbeat. Loved, loved, loved it. Make sure you pick up some jewelry from a good jeweler and table clothes, they had some beautiful ones at the souks. Can’t wait to hear and see more about your journey! Holly

  6. What a nice way to start Monday morning – a beautiful trip and I don’t have to leave the house. Thank you. Also, thank you for the chocolate chip cookie recipe…I usually prefer a flat, crisper type but the brown butter really made these unique. I was low on chocolate chips so used half white chocolate chips (Guittards are best if you can find them) and the result was quite good.
I have been using your salad dressing recipe, substituting the lemon juice with rice vinegar. Who would know that garlic powder could do such wonders! I will try it with lemon juice but think I will prefer the less acidic rice vinegar. The dressing goes well with a number of different salad ingredients. Bravissimo!

  7. Everything looks grand from the arches to the bread making to the bottles of flavoring.
Ask someone what the strings are for on each bottle of flavoring, looked like a bottle seal at first but the string does not go up to the cap but does go below the label (control + to zoom in).
    best, Jerry

  8. Such lovely windows onto your journey. Even one of an actual window! Thank you for sending this and how wonderful that you are there. This grateful armchair traveller is already feasting on the trip.

  9. Deir el-Qamar is our family’s native town; the Mir Amine palace is great to have a bite to eat and soak up the view from the valley. Lots to see and so little time! Wishing you a great time!

  10. Great to hear you are there, safe and sound, Maureen. You are making us so envious!
Thanks for making time to share it. Enjoy for all of us.

  11. I’ll check my mail box if you think of me (us) in Lebanon …
    And you did.

Beautiful images. Those hands making bread …

Enjoy your stay. Meanwhile, a big embrace from Portugal.
