Postcard from Up North

They got up steam and proceeded calmly to the north where there seemed to be no people, but only mountains, lakes, reedy snow-filled steppes, and winter gods who played with storms and stars. ~Mark Helprin, A Winter’s Tale

(The winter gods have been playing well Up North. The tundra is buried in snow, but beautifully. Just as I am buried in the work of cookbook, but beautifully, happily. I’ll be back again with recipes, stories, and pictures soon.)

  1. You need a guide, I have been going to Lebanon every year for the last 40.
I grew up in Beirut, but Deirmimas was my home. So, every time I go, I spend most
of my time in the village and I act like it belongs to me. I know it like the back of
    my hand.
Any way, if you cant make it there, I and Fadia will still be more than happy to
have you over for a nice dinner. let me Know when you are in Lansing.

    1. I hope you can show me Dier Mimas some day, Sami! And I would love to come for dinner, thank you so much. Let’s be in touch.

  2. Your up North looks like down South. I have met you a few times and never realized your talents.
I also met most of your family. Any way, you went to Lebanon once and I am curious if you made it
    to Deirmimas.

  3. Hello, Maureen. Really looking forward to your book. Absolutely agree with Wendy’s comment, my grandmother, the cook in our family until she passed away at 93, would always say “It may not be much, but it was prepared with lots of love!” Her meals, whether simple or grand, were always delicious. And your book is going to be amazing! Sending you good vibes and love from my neck of the woods.

    1. You are so kind, and I love hearing about your grandmother, whose comment reminds me of all of the aunts and Sittos I’ve ever known. Beautiful. Thank you!

  4. Maureen, just a word of encouragement. I read recently that scientific evidence now supports the belief many of us have that food prepared with love tastes better. The love you radiate in your cooking AND in your writing will find its way onto the pages of your cookbook … and into so many family homes across the country. Listen to your heart and follow your instincts. Now here’s some love from the South, where our fragrant daphne shrubs already are blooming! xoxo

    1. How kind and how special, Wendy–what beautiful (and encouraging!) words. Thank you so very much!
