Beautiful photo, Maureen, and a great quote. I needed that quote right now, so thank you…
Beautiful picture of the white pines planted in the 1930’s by the CCC [Civilian Conservation Corp.]. The telltail is the straight lines. If a man/boy planted 500 saplings in a day he got a Hersey bar over and beyond the $50 a month he earned, $45 of which went home to his parents. The CCC disappeared at the beginning of the Second World War when the young men went into the service. Here in Michigan we are reapping the benefits of the millions of trees that they planted.
Too few today know about and appreciate the visionary program that built and planted for a beleagured nation as well as helped so many of our fathers and grandfathers keep their dignity during the Great Depression…the CCC legacy grows in stature each year, like these heavenly white pines.
